La Toxica Montreal Review | Must-Try Mexican Restaurant in Chinatown
If you're looking for delicious Mexican food in Montreal, La Toxica is a restaurant worth discovering. Known as a local favourite, La Toxica serves up flavorful Mexican classics, including fresh guacamole, tacos, quesadillas, and more. With multiple locations across Montreal, it has become a popular choice for anyone craving authentic-inspired Mexican flavours for lunch or dinner.
During my recent visit, I stopped by the La Toxica Chinatown Montreal location for lunch. This newer location is conveniently located at 1059 St. Laurent Boulevard, just a short 5-minute walk from Place-d'Armes Metro Station in the heart of Montreal's Chinatown. Its central location makes it an easy stop while exploring the neighbourhood and nearby attractions.

The decor at La Toxica Chinatown Montreal is truly unique and immediately catches your attention when you walk in. The colourful artwork, custom paintings, and detailed murals throughout the walls and ceiling create a vibrant atmosphere that reflects the restaurant’s Mexican-inspired style.
It is clear that a lot of thought and creativity went into designing this space. From the eye-catching artwork to the small details throughout the restaurant, La Toxica has created an inviting environment that feels both fun and memorable.
The dining area is also spacious and can comfortably accommodate larger groups, making it a great option for celebrations, gatherings, or a casual meal with friends. I really appreciated the effort put into the decor and the attention to detail that makes this location stand out.
The menu at La Toxica in Chinatown, Montreal, is straightforward and user-friendly, featuring clear displays of prices, ingredients, and serving sizes for each item. The restaurant offers a diverse selection of Mexican-inspired dishes, which include appetizers, main courses, desserts, and refreshing beverages.
For my appetizer, I ordered the guacamole for $8. The portion size was very generous and easily enough to share between two people, with some leftovers to enjoy. This was honestly one of the best guacamoles I have had in a long time. The ingredients tasted fresh, the flavours were well balanced, and the crispy tortilla chips were the perfect pairing. The freshness and quality of the guacamole immediately stood out and made it a great start to my meal at La Toxica.
Tacos Birria
For my main dish, I ordered the Tacos Birria (4) with shredded chicken and cheese for $16. These tacos were definitely one of the highlights of my visit and earned a 9/10 from me.
The taco shells had the perfect texture—not too soft and not too crunchy—while the birria sauce added a delicious depth of flavour without overpowering the dish. The combination of tender shredded chicken, melted cheese, and savoury sauce created a flavorful and satisfying meal.
My only disappointment was that the tacos were served without any sides. Options such as rice, salad, or additional condiments had to be purchased separately. Considering the price point, I feel that including a small side would have made the meal feel like a better overall value. Despite that, the tacos were delicious, and I would definitely recommend trying them when visiting La Toxica.
Since this was my first visit to La Toxica Chinatown in Montreal, I wanted to experience more of their menu and ordered a Jarrito from their drink selection. As a big fan of mango, I chose the mango flavour, and it did not disappoint.
The drink was surprisingly refreshing, featuring a delicious fruity flavor that was not overly sweet. It complemented my tacos perfectly, adding a nice balance to the meal. Priced at only $3.50, the Jarrito offered great value and enhanced the overall dining experience.
If you enjoy Mexican-inspired drinks, La Toxica offers several options that pair well with their tacos, quesadillas, and other menu items.
Dessert
The best part of any meal for me is always dessert, so I was excited to try the churros at La Toxica. I ordered the churros for $8, which came with three pieces.
Unfortunately, this was not my favourite dish of the visit. The portion size was quite small for the price, and I found the churros to be overly sweet due to the amount of condensed milk. While the presentation was appealing, the flavour and texture did not meet my expectations compared with other churros I have tried.
Overall, I would rate the churros a 3/10. For the portion size and taste, I felt the price was higher than the value provided. Although I enjoyed many other items at La Toxica, the churros were not a standout dish for me.
Overall, I rate La Toxica Chinatown Montreal a 6/10. This rating could change in the future if I visit another location and have a different experience. The highlights of my visit were definitely the unique decor, delicious tacos, refreshing drink, and the friendly service from the staff.
The team at La Toxica was welcoming and helpful throughout my visit. They were patient with my questions and took the time to explain the menu and ingredients, which made the dining experience more enjoyable.
The main areas that disappointed me were the cleanliness of the tables and the churros. The Chinatown, Montreal, location features black tablecloths, and unfortunately, the table I sat at had noticeable stains and crumbs when I arrived. While I understand that busy restaurants can experience moments like this, cleanliness is an important part of the overall dining experience.
I was also not a fan of the churros. The condensed milk made them much sweeter than I personally preferred. In my opinion, serving the condensed milk on the side, along with another option such as melted chocolate or ice cream, could create a better balance and improve the dessert experience.
One great thing about La Toxica is that they have multiple locations throughout Montreal. Visiting another location may provide a different experience, and I would be interested in trying more dishes from their menu in the future.
